Mis Alumnas y Yo
I am teaching a digital photography class to about 15 students right now. Teaching gives me an opportunity to get to know some Salvadoran youth.
A couple of my students and I (mis alumnas y yo) recorded this very short video to say hello to our families in other countries. Nearly every Salvadoran has family members in the US or Canada.

Wow, tu espanol es muy bien. Tengo mucho orgullo en ti. Mama
Do you think you could slow down a bit? My eighth grade Spanish skills aren't quite as refined as I had hoped when I listened.
It's amazing how well you speak! Have fun teaching!

Well the clarity of the picture was great and the three of you sound and seem happy and healthy......B U T, I DID NOT understand a word....perhaps I wasn't supposed to....but only to understand that you were offering a greeting to the folks back home (?).
Enjoy the pictures you so thoughtfully send each month.

If you can understand that we were sending a hello to our families back home, then you get the gist of our short conversation. And that shows how much we can communicate to each other regardless of language.
At one point I ask the girls how old they are and when they say that they are 12 years old, I tell them that I have a neice in Cleveland that is also 12, so we say hi to her too.
I was thinking the other day about how John and I are hardly exceptional in having family in the States. Nearly everyone I meet in El Salvador has family in the US. But whereas John and I can fly home to visit ours, many Salvadorans may never see their families again. When I miss our families in the States, I try to remember this and recognize how fortunate we are.

I have no idea of what the actual words you were speaking, but you sound like you really do speak Spanish very well.
You should re-record the video in English as a lark (well perhaps without the two students).
Glad to see you are doing well.

I did understand most of the words you said, (after the 5th time).
Mucho amor, mama
wow! and only a short time ago you were putting post-it notes with spanish vocabulary on everything in your lives!
so good to see and hear you--
Betsy
Good memory, Betsy! And to think that I forgot to put a post-it note on my forehead that said "Gringa"!
Good to hear from you!
